About Us
We’re a small horse farm located in West Central Illinois, surrounded by cattle and cornfields. We have a small group of well-bred broodmares that we raise between 2 to 4 foals per year.
After years searching for the bloodlines that have been proven over the years, we have some of the best American Quarter Horse bloodlines in the industry. We are devoted to raising some of the best horses in our area and are very selective when it comes to choosing just the right stallion to breed to our mare.
Our goal is to breed a sound, well-defined individual with good, sound feet and bone, a strong back, good muscle definition, a small head and ears, a long thin neck that ties in deep into their chest, a beautiful top line and a natural slope to their shoulder. With an excellent conformation, we like to add the PLUS of outstanding and eye-appealing color – Dun, Red Dun, Buckskin, and Grullo.
But looks and color alone can’t work a cow, bend a pole, run a barrel pattern, or be a trusted sure-footed mount on a steep trail. Looks and color alone doesn’t predispose the equine to a warm, friendly personality – one that comes up to you in the field, that wants to see you and have you work with them.
We give all of our horses, and especially the young stock, daily hands-on attention. Our horses receive the best of care – each is fed appropriate rations of grain, hay and/or pasture grass. Each also receive annual vaccinations, semi-annual West Nile vaccinations, semi-annual professional equine dentistry, de-worming every 8 weeks, and hoof care every six to seven weeks. They are allowed to run and play in the pasture with one another and not kept in a box stall 24/7 which causes boredom and undesirable vises.
Each foal is handled from day one receiving lessons in halter, tying, leading, blankets and other spooks, trailer loading and hauling, hoof care and farrier work, clipper training, fly spray, bathing and much more.
When you buy a foal from us you will have a horse that comes up to you out in the field because they love the attention, a horse that you can continue with its advanced education because the groundwork is already done. A horse that will perform for you, work hard for you and show you off in a crowd. Others will take notice of the well-mannered, beautiful horse YOU own. Nothing beats the overwhelming joy and excitement of being aboard (or to have in-hand) the well-built, beautiful horse and have heads turn and complements flow to you and your horse.
We are proud of our small establishment and the excellent friendships that have developed with every horse that we’ve sold. Our buyers keep us posted on how they are getting along with their new purchase and we keep in touch with them. Our horses are our “kids” and we care about the quality of their new home and the care they receive. (Go to the Testimonials page )
We don’t “cold” buy and sell horses. We nurture the mare during fetal development, we raise and train the foal, we show the foal – not heavily but enough to sooth the “horse show jitters” – for exposure and education.
When you consider purchasing a horse, we hope you’ll consider a horse bred and raised by Double D Quarter Horses.
